Project Overview
Immigrants and refugees encounter significant risk as they move to Nebraska. They are faced with the task of earning an income in a country with which they are unfamiliar in myriad ways. Many of these immigrants and refugees come from a farming background in their home country and desire to continue in this tradition when they arrive here. However, additional risks often keep them from reaching this goal. The climate, land acquisition policies and cost, market, and business practices are often significantly different from their home country. These farmers need the financial risk management tools necessary to run a successful small farm business in the competitive market found here. The objective of this project is to give participants the economic risk-reduction tools they need. Eighteen farmers in the CROPS farmer training program will attend workshops, with twelve incorporating at least one financial risk management tool into their long-term farm business.
