Project Overview
This project addressed food safety-related legal liabilities and financial risks producers undertake in production and processing for direct markets. The 144 project participants were Inland Northwest farmers and ranchers producing and selling crops, livestock, and/or dairy products through direct and semi-direct markets. The project built on Rural Roots’ 2007 food safety workshop series by providing hands-on experience in risk assessment and mitigation. Participants attended one of ten on-farm workshops on “Assessing and Developing Good Agricultural Practices to Ensure Food Safety” offered throughout the region. Upon completing the workshops, 109 (76%) participants increased their understanding of on-farm food safety risks, 75 (52%) said they gained the knowledge and skills needed to perform their own on-farm food safety assessment and 104 (72%) inteneded to take steps to mitigate food safety risks and liabilities on their farms. By 3 months after the workshops, 20 participants (71% of respondents) had begun developing food safety plans for their farm and 19 (68% of respondents) had implemented changes to reduce risks related to food safety.
Number of Participants: 144
