Project Overview

This project addressed price risk management education for crop and cattle producer groups. The crop industry in Utah is composed primarily of small to medium-sized producers. They continue to experience volatility in prices from weather and industry related shocks, affecting their net returns. Two interactive workshops were held at the main geographical crop production areas of the state, one in northern Utah and one in central Utah. Producers participated in education and interactive learning exercises designed to improve their knowledge and abilities to manage their return risk. Utah’s cattle producers have faced a steady surge in market price risk, as result of changing feed grain and alfalfa hay costs. Three workshops where held for Utah cattle producers with added emphasis on the younger cattlemen that presented education on the use of insurance and futures markets (two workshops had interactive material), providing them with management tools to mitigate their marketing risk.
