Project Overview
Iowa’s beginning farmers
and women farmers, who often have fewer resources and less experience, have the
greatest exposure to financial, market and production risks. To meet the needs
of this underserved audience, our farm management team focused on developing
new Ag Decision Maker resources and delivering impactful programs. The
team created seven new insurance publications, one ARC-Co. / PLC decision tool set; and significantly updated eight previous publications which are posted on www.extension.iastate.edu/agdm.
These online materials were accessed 45,986 times. In addition, six new risk management videos were viewed 352 times, four webinars specific to this project reached 1,348 people, and the Financial Decision Making online course was completed by 124 people. The team provided virtual or face-to-face instruction through: a) eight Annie’s Project courses and
eight other multi-session risk management courses reaching 187 women; b) 14 meetings reaching 152 beginning farmers; and c)
14 workshops reaching 359 people interested in
farm succession and transition. Program evaluation, including seven success stories with
interviews demonstrated program participants: 1) understood how insurance protects net farm income; 2) accessed risk management tools and decision-making
resources; 3) implemented new risk management strategies; and 4) developed
supportive connections with Extension professionals and each other.
