Project Overview
The High Plains Ranch Practicum (HPRanchPracticum.com) occurred from June 2008 to January 2009, relating in-depth ranch management strategies to 22 participants. The program consisted of eight full-days of instruction spread across six months. The RME grant allowed the program to be expanded to include sessions on writing business and livestock marketing plans, understanding range and livestock price insurance and more in-depth and individual assistance on calculating unit cost of production. The expansion also included individual ranch visits before and following the program to assist the participant in gathering, interpreting and applying the information. A scholarship program was initiated to reward producers completing assignments including a complete business plan, marketing plan, enterprise analysis and cost of production calculations for their operation.
