Project Overview
This educational program was targeted at Idaho's grain and livestock producers who face heightened levels of market volatility and uncertainty. These two sectors of the Idaho agricultural economy contributed more than $3.2 billion in farm-gate receipts in 2015, representing 43% of total Idaho farm-gate value. Educational components focused on statewide workshops and webinars on grain and livestock marketing, managing input costs in tight budget years, weather and water outlook and managing pest and disease under changing climatic conditions. We produced a weekly Idaho Grain Market Report, which meets an important need since Idaho is the only major grain producing state without a federal grain market news service. Northern Idaho extension programs focused on farm succession and estate planning and farm management and grain and livestock marketing. Southern Idaho extension programs focused on profitable strategies for water curtailments, beginning farm and ranch management, Idaho ag outlook, farm succession and estate planning, grain and livestock marketing and mitigating risk in the face of changing consumer preferences and expectations about their food supply.
