Project Overview
Little is known in our state about managing risks related to the reintroduction of wolves in Colorado, and there is no insurance. We coordinated with Colorado State University (CSU) Extension and Colorado Parks and Wildlife to lead extension education efforts focused on helping livestock producers. We produced a video, website, and other educational materials. We used this grant to add a trip for a cohort of agent-rancher pairs from counties impacted by wolves. We took them to the Blackfoot Challenge in Montana and other nearby locations so that Colorado ranchers could hear how to mitigate such risks from their peers. This effort built knowledgeable and trusted peers in each county, who have seen first hand the methods and results presented in our educational materials. After the trip, producers and agents went on to create and/or speak in producer meetings, to legislators, and students, and in special media or webinar events, to pioneer cost-share funding with NRCS, assist with government assistance through NRCS, and the state (including a special license plate), to organize local producer conservation groups, and many other activities. One producer hosted a dialog on her ranch that included producers and wolf advocates. Another became the wildlife commissioner.
