Ten of California’s most destructive fires occurred in the last five years, which Napa winegrape producers have felt acutely: 180,358 Napa acres have burned since 2017, causing staggering losses to Napa farms. 2020’s wildfire related losses alone could cost Napa winegrape producers ~$1 billion. Climate variability risks, predicted to worsen, are already having severe financial ramifications on producers, creating an urgent need to reduce adverse effects of uncertainties through resiliency management education. Through this grant project, our educational efforts helped producers to implement flexible decision making to ultimately minimize risks and improve economic viability for their farms. To accomplish this, we provide education in English and Spanish to 1561 Napa winegrape producers on Resiliency Management and Climate Variability Risk. To achieve these results, we provided: an educational video on wildfire preparedness and defensible space, four webinars, two in-person fire resources programs, and one Growing Conditions report/presentation. The results achieved were exciting with Napa producers understanding resiliency management practices; fire safety/prevention practices; and contracting strategies, and as a result implementing changes.
