Project Overview
Napa winegrape production dropped 37.8% from 2019-2020, declining 36% from the previous ten year average, primarily from climate-related wildfire impacts. Napa County was almost entirely under an exceptional drought designation and September 2021 was the driest Napa has been in 127 years. Climate variability risks continue to worsen, impact producers’ economic viability, and create an urgent need to reduce adverse effects of uncertainties through resiliency management education.
Through this grant project, NVG helped producers implement flexible decision making to minimize risk through education in English/Spanish to 576 Napa winegrape producers on Resiliency Management, Climate Variability, and Wildfire Prevention and Water Conservation. Programs included four Climate Science Seminars (125 attendees), one Climate Science video in Spanish (75 viewers), and multiple workshops at one all-day educational ROOTSTOCK event on fire safety/prevention practices and water conservation strategies (166 attendees + 210 online attendees).
Results from evaluations from the Climate Science Seminars resulted in 100% of producers responding YES that they are likely/very likely to implement what they learned. Evaluations from ROOTSTOCK showed 91.8% likely/very likely to implement tools they learned for water conservation/vineyard irrigation strategies to navigate worsening drought/heat conditions. Additionally, 59% will evaluate and/or update their current fire safety and prevention plan.
