Project Overview
The project strengthened the financial risk management capacity of 120+ beginning, socially disadvantaged farm owners on California’s Central Coast, many of whom are immigrant farmworkers. Specifically, the project will focued on improving financial literacy, record-keeping, cash flow management, and profitability analysis, so that farmers could improve their management decisions.
The project employed classroom and field instruction and one-on-one technical assistance aided by newly developed learning tools. The project leveraged the expertise of ALBA’s internal staff and three partners which specialize in providing business services and consulting to start-up, socially disadvantaged farms. The project employed the following measures to reach its goal:
- 12 workshops on financial management, including crop insurance, for pre-launch and start-up farms.
- 72 hours of technical assistance to 24 farmers readying to launch a farm business.
- 240 hours of technical and lending assistance to start-up farms provided by partners.
- 300 hours of technical assistance from staff on accounts payable, cash flow management, record-keeping, financial projections, performance evaluation and business planning.
- Development of case studies, cash flow template and a peer-to-peer Farming for Profit learning group to enhance early-stage financial management.
