Project Overview
This project represented a continuation of a previously funded project that included a survey distributed to over 200 producers attending the 2008 Colorado Wheat Planting Decision Meetings. That survey assessed the demand for developing a decision support tool for the wheat variety selection problem and the feasibility of doing so given the producers´ criteria systems for evaluating seed varieties. Grain producers are faced with increasingly complicated variety selection decisions with numerous new varieties emerging that are designed to address specific growing concerns. Ninety-two percent of producers surveyed at the 2008 meetings indicated they wanted to be kept up-to-date on any tool development progress. Thirty-five producers (30%) indicated strong interest in providing direct feedback during the development process. This project resulted in the development of the Wheat Variety Decision Tool to help meet these decision support needs. Support training included a 20 minute video tutorial available online and one-on-one meetings with producers. The Colorado Association of Wheat Producers is committed to supporting future training for producers as a part of their ongoing commitment to help producers make good variety selection decisions.
