Project Overview
California FarmLink’s innovative Farm Financial Education Program utilized workshops and one-on-one technical assistance to support small-scale producers in business risk management strategies.
FarmLink produced three regional Farm Finance Expos, with
collaborators, to provide 139 beginning farmers with key financial
management tools and an understanding of the farm financing landscape.
Following the Expos, 25 farmers with under $250,000 in annual sales and 2 to 5 years in operation continued their financial education with FarmLink staff and collaborators such as Kitchen Table Advisors, a nonprofit that provides dedicated, in-depth support to a limited number of farms. These advisors drilled down into financial management issues facing each producer with in-person sessions, over the phone, and by email. Farmers analyzed the knowledge they have gained to decide on specific strategies for business improvement, develop or write applications to lenders or buyers, and implement financial, business and strategic plans. Advisory teams included collaborators, fellow farmers, finance/accounting experts and FarmLink staff.
