Project Overview
Our primary objective was to educate producers about the opportunities and risks associated with direct marketing of lamb, primarily through farmersĀ“ markets. Topics will included the importance of compliance with established food safety practices, the applicable regulations from USDA, the California Department of Food and Agriculture, county health departments, and the risks resulting from noncompliance with these regulations, as well as the risks associated with entering into a new business model. We established a foundation of resources and tools to minimize these risks, identified existing infrastructure, and helped producers network for greater efficiency. Specific risk assessment and minimization of business risk through the development of a strategic business plan were components of the workshop. Although the focus was primarily on lamb, these strategies will translate directly to goat, beef, and pork producers, all of whom were involved with the workshop and are direct market through farmersĀ“ markets.
