Project Overview
This project addresses production, price, financial, and legal risks of Missouri farmers who are expanding- or converting to organic production. Participants are 140 farmers in the northwest, west central, central, and south central part of the state who will attend four day-long workshops on organic certification, record keeping and marketing organic products. Trainers include staff from Missouri Department of Agriculture, University Outreach and Extension, Missouri Organic Association, and USDA agencies, who will build on workshops held in 1998 and 1999. An interactive farm model will illustrate organic practices and requirements. Within 8 months of training:
*40 participants will apply for state organic certification
*75 percent of applicants will be in compliance with state regulations and National Organic standards
In addition, 100 participants will be able to:
*Evaluate state and private certification options,
*Keep accurate records and audit trails required by law for organic certification,
*Evaluate marketing options for organic products.
Number of Participants: 146
