Primary goals of this project were to improve the risk management skills and decisions of commercial dairies and small- to medium-scale beef producers. Due to COVID restrictions, we only reached about 200 individual through mask-to-mask trainings versus the over 500 we expected to reach with face-to-face Risk Management Education (RME). RME for dairy producers was made available through online curriculum that addresses Dairy Revenue Protection, Livestock Gross Margin, FSA’s Dairy Margin Coverage Program, at the URL of http://www.farmmanagement.org/aginuncertaintimesenglish/2020/11/23/dairy-risk-management/.
RME to livestock producers covered; 1) Whole Farm Revenue Protection, Livestock Risk Protection, and PRF-Rainfall Index for cow-calf producers, 2) improving risk and business management practices by providing over 250 record keeping workbooks and notebooks, and 3) providing current market situation and outlook information through monthly emails to over 1,000 individuals. We reached over 200 livestock participants, mainly tribal producers, directly through 7 different in-person workshops. Of our workshop participants, 71% self-reported that they had a good or complete understanding of the risk management areas addressed after our trainings versus only 32% before receiving the RME provided.
