Project Overview

Beginning farmers and ranchers enrolled in this project were introduced to key financial risks. Through their participation in the project, they decreased their financial risk by improving their ability to accurately organize and analyze their financial and production records.
Through group and individualized education, producers learned to use QuickBooks® for financial accounting and a spreadsheet for keeping production records to support their business decision-making. Project participants included beginning (primarily limited-resource) producers in seven Utah counties. Forty-six producers attended a business management workshop, and 41 participated in a 15-hour QuickBooks® class. Of the QuickBooks® participants, 33 participated in four or more one-on-one training sessions at their business site. The training concluded with preparation for completing a FINPACK® FINAN analysis. At the end of the project, 33 producers gained the skills necessary to do a FINAN analysis and make sound business decisions.
