Project Overview

Through Managing Marketing and Production Risks for Small Forest Producers in San Juan County, WA, NNRG provided training and tools to more than 125 forest producers. NNRG engaged with and connected forest producers, wood products users, and local practitioners; hosted four workshops; completed 28 site visits; and raised awareness of more than 200 producers about ecological forestry and wood products markets in the San Juans. This project resulted in 36 producers indicating they have a better understanding of how to manage a timber sale and 27 producers indicating they will implement harvest and management activities within five years.

San Juans producers face many challenges, utmost of these: overstocking and a dry climate equating to increased susceptibility to insects, diseases, and catastrophic fire; isolated geography and high production costs; and many stands with limited merchantable material. This project provided producers with information and tools to address challenges and implement beneficial practices.
