Project Overview
Federal crop insurance participation for Alabama producers is remarkably low. Minority producers, many of whom utilize both livestock and diversified crop production systems, have typically remained uninsured. Whole Farm Revenue Protection expanded insurance options for producers, but potential adopters have been deterred by daunting recordkeeping requirements and the lack of knowledge of relevant insurance products. The project's singular goal was to promote awareness of and participation in crop insurance, risk management and federal programs opportunities among producers through diverse media platforms; relationship with producer organizations; financial education; face-to-face and virtual training workshops; and dissemination of culturally and linguistically appropriate materials in partnership with National Crop Insurance Service, Alabama Cooperative Extension System, livestock, and specialty crop producer organizations. The training focused on crop insurance, farm finances and recordkeeping, risk management, and WFRP to manage risk; and was held in strategic locations across the Black Belt region.
