Project Overview
Hopi Ranching Improvement Program covered the risk management areas of financial records and analysis and transition to new production systems.
The Livestock Records – Animal and Financial Records, Herd Health, and Beef Quality Assurance program training educated Hopi ranchers on maintaining records for use in financial decision making and decisions concerning the livestock within their herds. Herd Health and Beef Quality Assurance records are becoming part of producers´ long-term herd management programs and records relating to that are be part of the overall financial and livestock record keeping.
The audience was livestock producers on the Hopi Indian Reservation in northeastern Arizona. The training was through five workshops covering eight separate topic. The covered topics in order were: Bull Soundness Exam; Beef Quality Assurance; Calving; Livestock & Financial Management Record; Pre-Conditioning Practices; Marketing; and Vaccinations.
The participants indicated through evaluations they will use financial and livestock record keeping, herd health program and beef quality assurance as part of their overall herd management programs. Over time we expect to see an increase productivity of their herds.
