Project Overview
Women non-operator farmland owners in Iowa and Nebraska attended six half-day regional discussion meetings and/or one full-day conference addressing legal issues they had previously identified as priorities: fencing and drainage law, conservation leasing, talking with tenants about soil conservation, wind development, and farm transition.
One hundred percent of the 158 attendees reported gaining both knowledge and confidence in addressing at least one of these issues with family members and tenants. Of these, 103 committed in writing to address at least one issue of concern within the next year by talking with family members, tenants, and/or service providers.
The project expanded upon our successful Women Caring for the Land program, which brings together women farmland owners in groups of 10 - 20 for peer-to-peer, facilitated conservation discussions. Since 2009, more than 1,000 women landowners (most 65+) have attended meetings in the upper Midwest.
Fact sheets have been developed by Edward Cox of Drake Agricultural Law Center on drainage law, fencing law and conservation leases for landowners in Iowa and Nebraska. These materials were made available to meeting participants, and are also available as free PDF downloads on the Women Caring for the Land website. (Also included with this report.)
