Project Overview
Today’s tight labor market has heightened farms’ human-related risks. To help Missouri farmers improve human resource management skills and comply with labor laws, this project developed two types of educational materials and delivered them through in-person meetings and marketed them online.
First, the project created eight instructional videos to teach producers how to manage people and the employment process. Video topics include how to write a job description, what to ask or not ask during an interview, how to structure a new hire’s first day, how to develop a compensation plan, how to conduct a performance review and what to do if terminating employees. The selected topics tend to create the most challenges for farm employers. Second, for each video, the project team developed a corresponding resource — worksheet, checklist or template — farms can use to apply the concepts taught in the video.
These materials taught Missouri farms how to better recruit, manage and retain employees and navigate personnel-related laws and implement appropriate human resources practices. A total of 122 producers attended in-person meetings and 614 producers accessed the instructional videos or corresponding resources online.
