Project Overview

Labor represents a major risk in agricultural production. This project provided education to thirty-five produce, winegrape and livestock producers in Jackson and Josephine counties in labor management. The project focused on two key labor pools employed by regional producers: farm interns and agricultural workers. In a four-week course, producers interested in developing internship programs learned all aspects of managing interns. In a separate four-week course, producers who use or seek to hire agricultural workers learned how to improve management policies and practices, comply with labor laws, and gain a base understanding of human resource management in agriculture. As a result of these courses, producers gained critical information in maintaining a secure labor force; ninety percent of participants report using at least one new management technique. Participants reported the most positive learning experiences from farmer presentations. The internship course became a basis for a new certification program for mentor farmers.
