Project Overview
This project addressed risk management education topics by covering areas in production risk,
marketing risk, financial risk and human risk. These topics were addressed through educational workshops that included subject presentations, hands-on examples and making use of spreadsheets, and discussions among peers and presenter(s). The workshops targeted small
and medium sized dairies (herd size of up to 1000 cows), as well as young dairy producers. Workshops where delivered in three different locations in the state of Idaho, as well as two locations in the state of Utah. The locations where in Eastern Idaho, South central Idaho, Southwest Idaho, Northern Utah and Central Utah. A two day workshop was held in each location, with an additional workshop being held in Southern Utah. A total of 69 participants among dairy farmers and dairy stakeholders attended and understood, analyzed, developed and discussed: (1) cash flow projections for mid-and long-term (time) periods, (2) identifying critical moments of
financial stress based on cash flow projections, (3) new Dairy Risk Protection (DRP) program,
(4) Dairy Futures and Options, (5) and Succession planning.
