Project Overview
Through this project, over 500 farmers accessed farm employment law information in the form of Farm Common’s ‘11 Ways to Build a Flexible, Legally Resilient Workforce’ overview guide, state-specific tip sheets covering the 11 areas of farm employment law called ‘Selected Essentials,’ or one of five in-depth guides. Farmers that preferred a multimedia approach were able to analyze their legal employment law vulnerabilities through our on-demand Advanced Employment Law Course, in-person meetings, or the on-demand ‘Is H2A a Solution for Your Farm?’ webinar. An average of 87% of those that accessed our materials or took a course with us increased their understanding of important farm employment law risk management strategies. 78 farmers analyzed their own use of independent contractors, workers’ compensation, overtime, payroll systems and potentially discrimination hiring practices. Additionally, 56 farmers reported they would change classifications of their employees to comply with employment law, 34 farmers reported they would purchase workers’ compensation or other worker injury liability insurance, and 46 reported they would modify how they pay their employees to comply with minimum wage and overtime requirements.
