Project Overview

South Dakota beef producers are exploring alternative production and marketing systems that offer sustainability in the current economy. This project improved the understanding of 1) organic and natural beef production requirements, 2) production management changes needed and 3) marketing alternatives associated with conversion to organic or natural production. During any transition producers must consider risk and associated costs. Producers in South Dakota have opportunities that enable them to convert to either a organic or natural program. One day training programs have been held at 7 locations across South Dakota with 45 participants at all locations. We trained producers on organic and natural production and associated benefits and risks. We worked with a minimum of 11% of the participants completing an individual financial analysis to allow them to make informed decisions toward their business plan.
