Project Overview
The Management Assessment Center for Value Added/Labor Intense Crop Managers was a comprehensive review of competencies of managers necessary for effective and successful job completion based on their job description. It assessed 19 participants from Wisconsin and Minnesota. Activities and simulations allowed participants to demonstrate skills on nine job-related attributes: Communication, Managing Resources, Planning and Organizing, Empathy, Leadership, Teamwork, Decision Making, Initiative and Creativity. Activities and simulations included a variety of delivery formats’ including individual and group sessions. Trained assessors evaluated participants as they engaged in activities and simulations over two consecutive days. All participants received one-on-one verbal and written feedback reports from the assessors, which outlined a professional improvement plan. These plans were developed cooperatively by assessors and participants. The program was offered to owners and managers of fruit, vegetable and other non-traditional cropping systems. Post evaluations showed that most participants increased their awareness of their managerial strengths and weaknesses and changed how they used those strengths to be a better manager on their farm. Not only has this project helped those that have participated, but created a curriculum that will be used in future Management Assessment Centers!
