DBI provided pastoral risk management education to
the Navajo ranchers, weavers, sheepherders and artist who work with livestock
operating on the Navajo Nation and some surrounding communities, utilizing
financial management, input analysis, marketing strategies, livestock and range
management tools. DBI programs focused on mitigating legal, financial, business
planning and human risks of doing business within the Navajo Nation and
allotted lands in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah.
Forty Four outreach and technical assistance workshops, seminars,
presentations focusing on value added fiber wool production, raising Navajo
Churro lamb and mutton for business, understanding Navajo Livestock Permit
Regulations, Plant Identification and Uses workshops including Navajo
traditional foods preparation, Value added Fiber workshops and Sheep and Wool
clinics were provided to limited resource, socially disadvantage ranchers,
including women, elders and youth. Four hundred and fifty
ranchers, sheepherders, weavers, hand spinners, students, artist, combined
received risk management education in enterprise development, business
marketing and production risk mitigation. Over 150 ranchers,
sheepherders, weavers and artists improved their production, planning,
understanding new markets, understanding branded labeling for value added
products, understood Navajo Grazing and land use laws combined.
