Project Overview
Many Veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars view farming as a career path that can provide a job, self-directed career, or even physical or emotional therapy. However, many of these prospective farmers are unaware of risk-management resources, advisers and tools for farm
start-up and operation.
Four introductory workshops and six farm/facility tours provided over 150 military veterans with resources and introductions to farming practices and business planning in the central Missouri region surrounding Fort Leonard Wood (FLW). FLW is a center for Armed Services member training while many recently retired Veterans have chosen to settle in the surrounding communities. Area educational and service organizations hosted the events for current and prospective farmers.
Participants identified a broad range of farming interests for future programming and contacted service providers for followup conversations about conservation practices, farm loans, disability services, and business planning. Project partners created plans for further program development together.
