Project Overview
Potato crop insurance policies are extremely complex due to quality concerns, numerous special endorsements, and unique varieties/markets. The first goal of this program is to increase general awareness of unique program features as widespread misunderstanding exists. A second goal is to discuss merits of alternative program provisions and human risk including implications for fraud, over production, regional bias, and differential incentives among companies, agents, and producers. The Northern Plains Potato Growers will collaborate in targeting 100 producers and 250 crop insurance agents in MN, ND, and SD. The growers will participate in four day-long workshops. Agent participation will occur during an existing regional crop insurance program. Participants are expected to become more aware of basic potato crop insurance provisions and delineate implications of alternative program provisions currently being contemplated by RMA. At the end of the program, additional sessions were prepared for 250 agricultural lenders and 82 growers/agents in a follow up meeting.
