Project Overview
Our project underwent many changes due to unique difficulties rooted in personal and organizational changes but did still manage to accomplish some of its goals and outcomes in a reduced and modified manner. Local groups at each of the 3 reservations identified did form to involve youth in exploring ways that they could become involved in food production and resource management on their reservations and beyond. In Cheyenne River, a youth group formed to study Chokecherry growth and utilization. In their meetings they studied plant growth, harvesting and different cultural ways of using the plant. They also grew other food plants. Unfortunately staffing change and vacancy ended this group prior to the main camp. This was also the case on the Pine Ridge Reservation although there was some level of continuity with their gardening groups. On the Rosebud Reservation, staffing was also an issue but the filling of an important vacancy allowed for Range and resource programming as well as the existing youth gardening, food utilization and farmers market youth group activities. When that staff addition allowed for the PI to proceed with previously stilted plans for a camp style youth workshop, some of the youth involved with these local groups were able to participate. Only 1 camp style workshop took place however, it was well planned and has inspired the planning group to continue with further follow up workshops and local activities.
