Project Overview

This project addressed the need of producers to have a firm understanding of all available grain marketing tools in order to effectively manage price risk. We conducted four workshops throughout the state of Kansas with total participation of around 125. We tailored the program toward those producers who had little price risk management knowledge. Participants received a complete education on the basics of cash grain markets as well as futures and options markets through the use of speakers and other teaching aids, such as real-life examples and scenarios. Upon completion of the workshop, producers should have been able to determine which grain marketing tool was most appropriate for a given situation. Now around six months after workshop completion, follow-up surveys show more than 75 producers are using information gained from our program when making decisions regarding their individual marketing plans and grain price risk management.
