Project Overview
This project builds off successful online education modules from the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Farm, Food and Enterprise Developments (FFED) Program. Based on FFED’s connections and ability to target specialty crop producers, business owners, direct-to-consumer marketers, and farm insurance agents across the state of Iowa, the underserved producers were provided specialty crop risk management educational material through a virtual platform. The online webinar series consisted of 10 webinars; Why is Risk Management Important?, Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) - Crop Insurance Resources, Whole Farm Revenue Protection, Risk Management for Perennial Crops, Risk Management for Vegetable Crops, Food Safety on the Farm, Ag Decision Maker Resources, Weather Patterns and Management Tools, Farm Finances, and Risk Management for Organic Production. Each module had a video presentation. Upon completing the course, the participant had information, tools and best practice techniques to use to alleviate risks in their specialty crop operation. The webinars were recorded which increased the availability to all farmers allowing reach to greater audiences. Survey instruments assessed knowledge gained immediately after the webinars and captured behavior change from participants.
