Project Overview
Managing the risks associated with internet commerce and social media is of great importance to agritourism farmers who are planning to directly market their products and services online. These farmers currently have few specific educational resources despite a growing demand for online services and access. We created a program to help agritourism farmers navigate the risk management issues arising from e-commerce and social networking. Specifically, we 1) developed a model risk management plan specific to agritourism focusing on e-commerce and social networking; 2) developed and conducted two education seminars and one webinar for the purpose of sharing information and introducing approximately 65 farmers to this model; and 3) offered follow-up technical assistance to 15 farmers interested in implementing and monitoring their own personalized risk management plan. The workshops and webinar helped agritourism providers develop an understanding of how to economically and efficiently market their ventures and continue to promote positive agricultural and rural experiences. We were not able to provide technical support to specific farmers due to a lack of interest, but remain confident that the high level of participation in the webinar, and its availability online mean that the project has met its proposed results.
