Project Overview
The long-term goal of this project is to expand
extension risk management education using selected Insurance and Non-Insurance
Based Tools to inform, train, and motivate the targeted beneficiaries to act in
developing and implementing sound risk management plans and strategies on their
farms and ranches. So far, the project has reached 202 small and medium-sized limited
resource, socially disadvantaged, women tenant, veteran, beginning producers within
seven (7) clusters covering 37 counties of Florida. These producers have commenced their training in understanding how to participate in USDA COVID-19 Risk Mitigation programs. As of the Second quarter they will
be trained in using two Insurance Based tools (Whole-Farm Revenue Protection -
WFRP and Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program - NAP) and three
Non-Insurance Based tools (Product and Enterprise Diversification; Food Safety
Liability with GHP/GAP; Farm Financial Record Keeping/Tax Planning, and Cash
Flow Management). The objectives are (a) to improve the participation of
producers in insurance-based risk management products, and (b) use simplified
non-insurance-based tools as the foundation for risk mitigation strategies. The
expected results linked to these extension educational activities are (a) at
least 30% of beneficiaries maintaining records over the next 18 months such
that they can qualify for the WFRP; (b) 64% participate in NAP; and (c)
80% develop the competence after exposure to implement non-insurance-based risk
management tools on their farms and ranches.
