Project Overview
The project focused on the removal of uncertainties in the production and marketing of ethnic and specialty crops. Participants increased their knowledge in production practices, post harvest technology, marketing options and outlets, financial records and business planning.
Sixty-eight prospective producers attended workshops on product and enterprise diversification, market strategies, financial records and analysis. Participants consisted primarily of small and minority farmers and ranchers, and they understood the benefits of using business and marketing plans to operate their agribusiness profitable and sustainably.
Workshop programs were enhanced through field days, farm visits, on-farm demonstrations and one-on-one contact and mentoring, newsletters, and fact sheets.
One year after the four workshops, farmers will increase acreage or begin to grow ethnic and specialty crops; Fifteen will attempt to use a business plan to reduce economic risk; and 20 will use appropriate marketing techniques to market their products.
