Project Overview

A recently completed survey of University of Maryland Extension (UME) faculty found that 79.5% of responding Educators saw issues related to land leasing as an important issue for Maryland farmers.  We offered a series of 4 half-day workshops and two webinars on the basic principles in farmland leasing, communication with the other party, and on using mediation.  The workshops focused on: 1) what to consider when negotiating the lease; 2) online resources available to both landlords and tenants; 3) handling the landlord-tenant relationship, and 4) alternative dispute resolution. We held a shorter version of our workshops in conjunction with the Southern Maryland's Annie's II Project, covering online resources available and what to consider when negotiating a lease. Materials for the workshops will include an existing leasing publication explaining leasing issues to not only our target audience but all producers in Maryland.
