Project Overview

This project provided comprehensive risk management education for farmers residing in American Samoa. The full-time risk management extension educator conducted village-based workshops in collaboration with partner agencies covering the following topics: business planning for agribusinesses; marketing strategies; financial records; credit; tools for managing liability; leases and contracts; plans and tools to address death, divorce, disability and disease.
The targeted audience were all interested commercial and subsistence farmers, including Tongan and Samoan nationals residing in the Territory who have become permanent residents of American Samoa. The extension agent translated the above mentioned materials into Samoan and used them in her presentations. The agent conducted two village-based workshops a week over a ten-month period, that reached 337 farmers. Twenty farmers completed business plans while 100 others were able to develop written strategies to address issues important to their operation. In addition, 100 participants were able to improve their financial record-keeping skills.
