Project Overview

Too many Oklahoma livestock producers risk management plans or lack of a risk management plan are due to the absence of knowledge about risk management tools available. For example, after two years of severe drought producers were asked about insuring their forage crops. Many producers indicated that they did not know of any insurance plans available for forage crops. The Teaching New Tools for Risk Management to Livestock Producers in Oklahoma project created a workshop that combined traditional presentations from extension and industry professionals with hands-on case study exercises and simulations. These workshops helped teach Oklahoma and other states livestock producers about risk management tools such as Livestock Risk Protection, Pasture and Forage Insurance, and Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program. This workshop also taught using computers to maintain financial records for management and tax purposes using Quicken.
