Project Overview
Annie´s Project (New York State) addressed agricultural risk management education through personal strengths, financial management, record keeping, business planning, marketing, estate planning, insurance basics, and labor relations. Presentations by topical experts were supplemented at each host site with group discussions facilitated by discussion leaders from respective local communities, a key learning component of the program. Technology training for critical decisions making, individual and group exercises, homework assignments, and participant feedback were utilized for flexibility and program improvement.
The target audiences were women in agriculture from small to mid-size vegetable, fruit, livestock and dairy farms who were willing and able to access one of four Cornell Cooperative Extension Associations in Lewis, Oneida, Sullivan and Schoharie counties. Each host site participated concurrently through an interactive communications system, meeting for six consecutive weeks in January and February 2012 from 10 a.m. to 2 p. m., including a one-hour lunch period that enabled participants to socialize and build important support networks. The overwhelming result of Annie’s Project reported by participants was the amount of confidence they gained to use the information from the project to begin or change their current farming practices.
