Project Overview

The project addressed “Price or Market Risk” resulting in the improved capacity of participants to conduct business planning, and an improved understanding of financial analysis, contracts and negotiating skills. Training workshops, online meetings and technical assistance supported successful planning and implementation of a cooperative purchasing program to reduce price risk and to serve as a replicable industry model. Farmers analyzed individual enterprise costs to determine opportunity for savings through group buying, learned the basics of cooperative business development, and the steps for assessing the feasibility of organizing a purchasing group to reduce costs. Sixteen farmers applied learning by evaluating the feasibility of a purchasing group for electricity and organizing a standing committee of the NH Plant Growers Association to oversee cooperative purchases.
