Project Overview

This project was designed to meet the substantial unmet need - identified in a 2006 statewide survey of 273 farmers - for additional marketing support to direct-marketing CT farmers. It manages risk by capitalizing on the growing demand for locally grown food and farm products in Connecticut by consumers, restaurants and other wholesale outlets. A series of 3 workshops, one-on-one technical assistance and distribution of over 100 bound compilations of NECRME and USDA marketing-related publications helped farmers obtain the step by step, best practices and low cost solutions to both direct and wholesale marketing. This effort concentrated on 53 of farms at 3 different marketing technical assistance workshops and 18 farms for comprehensive one on one technical assistance with practical, creative, and technological marketing strategies to increase access to consumer and wholesale markets, diversify the products they offer, and make their farm businesses more viable. We also provided an additional 16 farms with resources including the compilation of a comprehensive best practices marketing guide that covered all streams including direct to consumer, wholesale as well as topics such as displaying products to grant writing.
