Project Overview

Through this project, 200 women farmers, primarily from the Northeast, increased their knowledge of effective marketing, financial management and business planning strateges through their participation in a 2.5-day, national Women in Sustainable Agriculture Conference in Burlington, VT, in October 2005. Of those, 75 individuals completed the "Grow Your Business" (GYB) intensive risk management track embedded in the conference and were eligible for up to $150 for professional fees to assist them in post-conference risk management activities. These participants identified their businesses´ areas of vulnerability, and used conference resources to assemble information and skills to address that priority. At the project´s conclusion, approximately 45 individuals indicated in some way that they had taken steps to reduce risk, including 35 who completed the reimbursement paperwork. Changes included: improving record-keeping, financial analysis and financial planning; implementing provisions of a new marketing or business plan; and making informed decisions about legal structures, purchases and capital improvements.
