Project Overview
This project helped western Massachusetts farmers learn financial management tools to support business decision-making, and to implement these tools to evaluate new market opportunities and major investment decisions. Fifty-nine value-added, small, or transitioning producers participated in workshops, working groups, and one-on-ones to reduce the risk of major farm decisions. Topics included financial record-keeping, enterprise analysis, and investment assessment using partial budgeting. Working groups focused on major investments and market opportunities. Upon completion, farmers understood how to assess risks and opportunities of major business decisions, had tools to evaluate specific opportunities, and implemented new record-keeping or decision-making strategies. The information and tools were adapted and made available on-line to reach 136 additional farmers. Within six months of completion of the project, 20 farmers will have evaluated a new opportunity or investment and 20 will have implemented at least one improvement in their business.
