Project Overview

This project addressed the financial and production risks that owners of traditional dairy businesses must manage to operate profitably. The high capital investment and complexity of operations management of traditional dairy business models (own all-do all) make it difficult for this model to generate adequate returns to both owner labor and management and capital. Innovative approaches to managing capital investments and improving herd performance through more intensive operations management can significantly improve profitability. As a result of the programs delivered through workshops and online training sessions, over 140 farm advisors and 800 dairy business owners improved their knowledge of accounting, the business model concept, business analysis and planning, and cash flow management. Also, 40 farms received $1500 grants from a project collaborator to utilize outside consultants to help develop plans to implement strategic management shifts to improve profitability or manage cash flow. To date 12 plans have been confirmed completed.
