Project Overview
This project provided training for forage and cattle producers in Mississippi that assisted them in developing strategies for managing the production risk of transitioning to new production systems and managing financial risk through economics of input decisions. This type of training had been identified as a primary need for producers in a recent state-wide needs assessment survey. In response to COVID-19 restrictions, a webinar was conducted instead of face-to-face workshops and included topics related to forage enterprise budgets, forage machinery costs, forage management, beef cattle nutrition, and forage decisions. Three presentations were also conducted at cattlemen's meetings and a forage field day. A website was developed that includes forage enterprise budgets, forage economics Extension publications, five video recordings of the webinar topics, and six video recordings of virtual pasture walks conducted during 2020. The target audience included traditional commercial producers and small farms and ranches. The webinar included an in-service training component for Extension agents in Mississippi.
