Project Overview

Development and release of a beef management quick reference guide provides an in-hand decision tool for novice clientele to make land-plant-animal decisions in their operation. A quick reference handbook was developed by members of the Alabama Extension Animal Science and Forage team to assist producers in making decisions on issues such as production risk, nutrition, and herd management, and marketing strategies. The handbook was released in fall 2018. Additional web-based risk management resources (webinars) were conducted in 2018, and promotion of the handbook and webinars were conducted through in-person meetings with beef producers in 2019. A four night Beef Systems Short Course was developed in summer 2019 to deliver basic beef risk management education to clientele using the Alabama Beef Handbook as supporting curriculum. Target audiences for risk management educational programs included beginning, veteran, historically underserved producers, and youth to enhance business sustainability and foster entrepreneurship. The economic impact of the quick reference guide, website, and programmatic activities associated with key audiences was measured using process and outcome surveys at these meetings.
