Project Overview

This project capitalized on recent research of sensors and software that gather spatial crop data and aid in the interpretation of vineyard variability.  Vine size and crop load management has been central to control risk and maintain quality.  Technology and research have recently allowed zonal crop load management within blocks.  Sensors have the ability to gather relative vine size, soil, and yield data.  Successful commercial adoption requires education to allow growers to diagnose the causes of variation and create differential management plans to decrease variability, thereby increasing fruit quality and industry sustainability.  In this project we teamed up with area growers and implemented sensor technology into their vineyards by producing research-based recommendations to alter management practices.  Over 300 grape growers from the Lake Erie grape region received information through weekly small grower meetings, conferences, workshops and electronic newsletters, resulting in 30 growers producing management plans based on data collected with tractor mounted sensors.
