Project Overview

A survey of Top Farmer Crop Workshop participants conducted by Purdue University found that only 21% of respondents had disability insurance and 30% had back-up management or labor, although both were considered very important sources of risk. The objectives of this project are to help producers assess their human resource risks, write a contingency plan, and increase interpersonal communication within the family and business. During one-day workshops conducted in July 2004 and January 2005, participants will develop a human resource risk matrix and a contingency plan outline for their respective businesses. In October 2004 and March 2005, follow-up programs consisting of group and individual in-depth sessions on contingency planning will result in the participants completing an executive summary of their contingency plan. A survey of all participants to determine if, and how, they have changed their management of human resource risks will conclude the project.
