Project Overview
In 2017 hurricane María stroked Puerto Rico and in the beginning of 2020 Puerto Rico had over 2,000 quakes, at least 2 dozen over magnitude 5 and between 7 and 8 in intensity. After these events, especially after the hurricane, farmers and ranchers have seen the need to have crop insurance, insurance in general, and accounting records especially to submit claims to the insurance companies and to start appealing process for the USDA insurance programs. With project funds we delivered accounting, financial skills and tools for the target audience so they can have up-to-date accounting information reduce financial risks and prepare for the next event. Classroom workshops will be conducted to two groups of at least 90 participants’ per-session using distance education (via Zoom) and 18 contact hours per group, Ag-Extension Agents can participate in the workshops. The second objective was to coordinate a conference for 75 producers about Managing Financial Risk and Preparedness before a natural disaster occurs by acquiring insurance and other recommendations after a focus group for producers that will express their previous experiences. Information about crop insurance availability, recommendations, educational materials will be available for participants and other underserved producers.
