Project Overview
Chenango and Broome Counties are working to address the educational needs of beginning and continuing livestock producers who continually look to find ways to improve their operations through best management practices and long-term financial planning. This program encompasses a series of educational classes (2 per month during grant duration) that producers were able to choose from. Topics included, but were not limited to, business management planning, retirement and farm transfer considerations, species-specific production short-courses, agri-tourism and insurance options, marketing strategies, animal health, and agri-business diversification. The participation target was 85-100 producers, who learned strategies to avoid business failure, reduce production costs and liabilities, maximize markets and profits, and to think long-term longevity of their operations through estate planning. Participants learned to write their own business plans, file tax forms correctly, develop marketing plans, develop rotational grazing strategies and herd health protocols, and create plans of transfer and succession. We have had 225 participants in grant program.
